On Friday, First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to Pascagoula, Mississippi to thank the Coast Guard for their dedication to the oil spill and christen a ship named after Dorothy C. Stratton, the U.S. Coast Guard’s first female commissioned officer.
For the somewhat somber occasion, (though she did crack open a bottle of champagne as part of the induction ceremony), Mrs. Obama chose to wear the ultimate in American sportswear – a sleeveless striped mousseline and layered organza dress from Peter Som‘s Spring 2010 collection.
“The woman makes the clothes – this is proof positive with Mrs. Obama,” Som told StyleList. “I’m humbled and honored that she wore one of my pieces. She’s an inspiration in so many ways to so many people. Her great style is the icing on top.”
The frock packed the perfect amount of punch for the event with sophisticated watercolor-esque stripes and a mixed print bouclé bottom.
